Maetaeng Elephant Park Elephants Helping Elephants Clinic
Every day our resident vet Im and her assistant Joy tend to the ailments of elephants both from the park and from the surrounding camps and villages. It’s great that elephants can now be treated here in the Maetaman valley.
It means that elephants can get regular treatment without the stress of a journey to Lampang Elephant Hospital some 3 hours away or having to wait for a vet to travel out to the valley.

Duang Tar has an eye infection and receives eye drops three times a day. After 2 weeks of treatment she made a full recovery.

Orachai has different problems with both eyes. In the left he has a corneal ulcer and the right eye has a small abrasion. He has different drops for each eye and again it’s great to have our own full time vet on hand to check his progress.

Mae Moo has a deep seated abscess which needs cleaning a packing every day. She’s making a good recovery and will need daily treatment for about another week.

Noi Lampang, at 40, is an older elephant. She spent much of her early life in the logging industry with the result that from time to time she gets inflamed muscles in her shoulders, she’s in the clinic today receiving pain relief medicine.

Siriporn is another older elephant who has been suffering with a bacterial infection on her toe nails since the beginning of the year. We are very happy that with ongoing daily treatment she has now almost fully recovered.

This really is the clinic working just as we wanted it too. Previously an elephant like Siriporn would have to spend several months at Lampang Elephant Hospital or we would have to have a vet in daily to treat her, both options are costly but more importantly, having our own vet means that the elephants receive excellent full time care right here in the park.
